Europe has no shortage of outdoor races. The useful ones for travellers do something more than close a road and place an arch over the finish. They make the surrounding landscape easier to understand.
At Goni Pony, hundreds of riders attack the Vršič Pass on small bicycles without gears, dressed as if the mountain had been transported back to the 1970s. At L'Eroica, old steel bicycles move over Tuscan gravel while Gaiole in Chianti turns the history of cycling into a village festival. Some of these events are already finished for 2026. How to Use This Calendar
Finished Does Not Mean Irrelevant
The first five events have already taken place in 2026. They remain useful for planning because most return at roughly the same point in the season, while the towns and roads around them often require accommodation months in advance. Treat their 2026 dates as evidence, not as confirmed dates for 2027.
Spectating Can Be the Better Trip
Several events are difficult to enter and harder to complete. Planica, the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, UTMB and Dolomitenmann offer strong spectator experiences. Watching from a town, official fan zone or accessible lift station is usually safer and more rewarding than trying to intercept competitors on remote terrain.
Registration Is Only the First Limit
A start place does not solve transport, accommodation, medical certificates or equipment rules. L'Eroica requires suitable historic-style bicycles and clothing. Fjällräven Classic requires camping equipment. High-alpine trail races can impose mandatory clothing and route changes. Read the organiser's rules before booking a flight.

Planica does not need to pretend that sport and place are separate. The flying hill rises from a narrow valley beneath the Ponce mountains, and the final weekend of the ski-jumping season turns that valley into a temporary city of flags, buses and people watching the sky.
The 2026 programme ran from March 26 to 29 and included men's qualification, individual and team competitions, plus the first official women's World Cup competition on the Gorišek Brothers flying hill. The road to Vršič is a respected Alpine climb. Goni Pony makes it stranger without making it easier. Riders take on 24 hairpins using 20-inch bicycles without gears, often in bright retro clothing that looks better suited to a dance floor than a mountain pass.
The 2026 event took place on June 6. The route climbed roughly 13 kilometres from Kranjska Gora to the 1,611-metre pass and added a timed "Rogličev kilometer" on the steepest part. Start places sold out, but the road and finish remained open to spectators.
This is precisely the kind of event that can carry a travel article: recognisable local equipment, a famous road, humour and genuine physical difficulty. The spectacle is not created by pretending the climb is easy. It is created by choosing the least suitable bicycle and going anyway.
